| On December 10th - 11th,
2004, Carl Duisberg Alumni Association Indonesia
(CDAAI) in cooperation with International
Weiterbildung und Entwicklung gGmbH (Inwent)
held a 2-day seminar about Public accountability
and Anti Corruption at Sahid Jaya Hotel in
Jakarta. This topic was chosen because corruption
is one among big problems being faced by many
countries in Asia including Indonesia. Interests
to attend this seminar come from all over
Indonesia but seats offer were limited only
to 50 participants. The expected outcome from
this seminar is that participants can improve
their knowledge about corruption, clarify
the characteristics and implications of corruption
and also can increase their awareness on anti-corruption
efforts.
This seminar was opened by Jens Kayser
as the representative from Inwent and by
Ari Wardani as the chairman of CDAAI. Main
speaker was Ms. Lillian Flores Luy, a resource
person from the Philippines. She started
the first day with explaining the definition,
patterns and consequences of corruption.
The next subject to be described are ethics
and accountability, following with an open
forum to give a chance for participants
asking questions or bringing problems or
issues to be examined and discussed with
the groups.
After lunch break, there were several guest
speakers came from well-known institution
specify on anti corruption field. Mr. Leonard
Simanjuntak from Transparency International
Indonesia (TII) talked about his organization,
more on anti corruption initiatives that
his organization focuses. Similar to the
speaker from TII, Mr. Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas
from Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (KPK)/Corruption
Eradication Commission explained about KPK
in brief. Details about what KPK does, the
job responsibilities, strategies, working
plan for the current year, and achievements
that have been made so far. The session
continues with another guest speaker; Mr.
Teten Masduki from Indonesia Corruption
Watch (ICW). He described a topic about
“Strategy to Eradict Corruption”.
He gave a comphrehensive overview about
corruption type, reasons behind why somebody
does a corruption, how to control and avoid
the occurrence of corruption, and steps
to eliminate corruptions. The session ended
with a presentation from the last resource
person, Mr. Faizal Basri, who gave a topic
about “Corruption, Main Enemy of Country
Civilization”.
On the second day, there was a workshop
where participants can address what can
be done in handling corruption, either personally
or institutionally. At the end of the seminar,
all ideas were summarized into a proposed
plan.
This seminar was a very attractive one
because anti corruption is everybody’s
interest. There were several participants
who asked CDAAI if there will be another
chance to hold a seminar with the same topic
in other part of Indonesia. Well, we’ll
see.
